„The Medium“ (1981) by Peter Maxwell Davies is an a cappella opera for a solo voice that depicts an intense inner journey to self-discovery.
At its center is a spiritualistic session in a marketplace – but the real drama takes place in the protagonist's psyche. Her voice, alone and exposed, becomes an expression of inner turmoil, her emotional and identity struggles intertwined with the question: Is this about real contact with the afterlife or about the ghosts of one's own past?
The relocation of the action to a theater box opens up an additional level of interpretation: the space itself becomes a metaphor for self-reflection and role-playing. Where does the character end, where does the self begin? How much identity is staging?
„The Medium“ disturbingly questions the boundaries between reality and illusion, between artist*in and role–, thus becoming an artistic and existential search for truth, identity and transformation.
